Tweed Bridge View from SW

SC 426160

Description Tweed Bridge View from SW

Date 7/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 426160

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Road bridge, Tweed Bridge, Lindean, Selkirkshire The relatively late date of this masonry bridge is indicated by its slender piers and rounded cutwaters. The detailing is quite different from that on earlier Selkirkshire bridges. This view showe the two semi-elliptical main spans, of unequal sizes, and the secondary flood-relief and access span on the right. The arch rings are of dressed stone. On its other side the bridge has a corbelled string course, removed on this side. The alteration of this side of the bridge has given it an ungainly appearance, showing the importance of detail in achieving a satisfying appearance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
