Scope and Content Steam mill engine, Philiphaugh Mill, Selkirk, Selkirkshire This engine was built to complement water power at Philiphaugh mill. It was built by Petrie of Rochdale, a noted Lancashire firm. This view shows the small engine used to aid the starting of the main engine by turning the crankshaft so that when steam was turned on the pistons could push with maximum force. Steam engines similar to this were widely used in the textile industry before electric power was widely available. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
