Scope and Content Steam mill engine, Philiphaugh Mill, Selkirk, Selkirkshire This engine was built to complement water power at Philiphaugh mill. It was built by Petrie of Rochdale, a noted Lancashire firm. This view shows how the engine had two pairs of cylinders driving a single shaft with a flywheel, seen behind the overhead steam pipe. Note the overhead crane used in maintaining the engine. The drive to the mill is on the right. Steam engines similar to this were widely used in the textile industry before electric power was widely available. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
