Scope and Content Ashiestiel Bridge, Selkirkshire This remarkable bridge was built by J & T Smith of Darnick. It had the largest rubble span of its time, 40.1m. This view shows the bridge from the west. The deep rubble arch ring can be seen. The walls on either side of the centre - spandrels and abutments - have been strengthened with tie-rods. The lack of good freestone in Selkirkshire meant that many of the county's bridges were built of rubble. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
