Date 1989

Collection Papers of Betty Willsher, historian, St Andrews, Scotland

Catalogue Number B 4022/4

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Scope and Content East face, gravestone commemorating TD and AH, Bo'ness churchyard, Falkirk The inscription on this stone is now illegible, and only the initials TD and AH remain. The skulls, bones and hourglass in the border signify man's mortality, echoed by the 'MOMENTO MORI' ('Remember You Must Die') inscription. The figure below holds a trumpet and rests its foot on a skull, possibly symbolising the soul's triumph over death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
