Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating William Cumming and Margaret Menzies, Bo'ness churchyard, Falkirk This gravestone commemorates William Cunning, who died in 1778, his wife Margaret Menzies and their children. A pair of winged cherubs represent the soul's ascent to heaven. The figures flanking the inscription are caryatids (a Classical female figure in the form of a support) with baskets of fruit on their heads. A winged skull at the bottom symbolises death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
