SC 424395

Description Currie, Paper Mill, chimney View from SE

Date 3/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 424395

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Chimney of paper mill, Currie, Midlothian This mill was founded as a handmade paper mill in the 18th century. The tall chimney was necessitated by the valley floor site of the mill. This view shows the unusual height of the chimney, and its ornamental top. A chimney of this height was a status symbol as well as a functional necessity to provide draught for the mill boilers. Paper mills used large volumes of steam to dry the paper during manufacture. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
