Date 2/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 424324

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Simpson's Maltings, Distillery Park, Haddington, East Lothian These maltings used locally-grown barley. The malting floors were probably built for the Haddington Distillery, founded in 1813, and converted to make grain whisky in 1846, when these floors were probably constructed. This view shows the main block of floors, built of sandstone rubble, with a kiln at the far end and one at the side. Beyond the kilns are what look like buildings containing vertical malt bins. These maltings continued in distillery use until the 1860s, latterly in the ownership of John Crabbie & Co. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
