Scope and Content Office and warehouse range, Springfield Paper Mill, Polton, Midlothian Polton is a hamlet on the River North Esk, and had two early paper mills, of which Springfield was the earlier. This view shows the mid 19th century three-storey warehouse and office range, with its original cart entry blocked up. Springfield originally made paper from linen rags beaten to a pulp in engines driven by water. The watery pulp was then drained through wire-cloth to form large sheets of paper, a laborious hand process replaced by machinery in the early 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
