Scope and Content View from south showing Islay House, Islay, Argyll and Bute Islay House stands to the north of the village of Bridgend, overlooking Loch Indaal. Erected in 1677 by Sir Hugh Campbell, the original house was altered and extended by a number of subsequent owners in 1731, the late 18th century, 1841 and 1909-11. This shows the south elevation of the house. The main block of 1677 and 1731 is to the left, with one of the late 18th-century stair-towers in the centre. To the right is the service block of 1841 which was modified in 1909-11 by Detmar Blow. This entrance front of the house presents a very unified appearance. The house has various traditional characteristics with its harled and limewashed masonry, crowstepped gables and 12-paned sash and case windows. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
