Scope and Content Drawing showing plan of farmsteading at Kilchiaran Farm, Islay, Argyll and Bute Kilchiaran is situated on the west of the Rhinns peninsula of Islay. This distinctive semicircular farmstead was built c.1830, after a new farm was established here to be run by a tenant farmer from Ayrshire. This plan shows the layout of the steading. The northern range contains a cart-shed (left), barn and byre (right). An extension on the north of the barn contains a threshing mill, which was originally powered by a waterwheel on the right (east) wall. On the southern side of the courtyard is a stable (left) and a milking parlour (right). Beyond this lies a semicircular cattle-court. This is divided into three sections and is enclosed by open sheds to provide shelter for the animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
