Scope and Content Detail of inscribed panel in churchyard wall at Kilnaughton Chapel, Islay, Argyll and Bute This late medieval chapel and burial-ground stand at Kilnaughton, c.2km west of Port Ellen on Islay's south coast. The chapel was dedicated to the 7th-century Scottish saint, St Nechtan, and remained in use until the end of the 17th century. Rubble-built, the chapel has been roofless and 'much decayed' since the late 18th century. Two 18th- or 19th-century burial-enclosures were added to the chapel's north wall. This inscribed panel in the wall surrounding the burial-ground commemorates Alexander MacDougall of Ardbeg's proposal to enclose it in 1852. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
