Scope and Content Detail of corn-drying kiln at Lurabus township, Islay, Argyll and Bute The remains of the township of Lurabus are situated on the east coast of the Oa peninsula of Islay, overlooking Kilnaughton Bay. Probably dating from the early 19th century, much of the township seems to have been abandoned by the late 19th century. This shows the remains of a corn-drying kiln built into the slope above the township. It was finished in rubble, and consisted of a lintelled flue (in the foreground), with a bowl behind. The corn would have been laid on mats within the bowl, a fire lit and the heat would have flowed through the flue to the bowl, and so dried the corn. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
