Scope and Content Aerial view of Rhinns of Islay Lighthouse on Orsay Island, Islay, Argyll and Bute The small islet of Orsay lies just south-west of the Rhinns peninsula of Islay, opposite the village of Portnahaven. Rhinns of Islay Lighthouse stands on the island's southern edge, and protects the stretch of waters leading into Loch Indaal. This six-storeyed tower was built in 1824-5 by John Gibb to designs by Robert Stevenson and was the first lighthouse built on Islay by the Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses. They also built the adjoining single-storeyed, flat-roofed keepers' houses. New accommodation was built to the east (right) c.1900. All the buildings are limewashed to protect the rubble stonework from the salt from the sea. The original flashing light (rather than fixed) of 1896 was electrified in 1978 during modernisation.
