Scope and Content Detail of fragment of carved grave-slab from chapel on Texa Island, Islay, Argyll and Bute The tiny island of Texa lies off Islay's south-east coast, east of Port Ellen. There are traces of agricultural activity on the island, which was abandoned in the late 19th century. A number of ruinous buildings survive as remnants of this occupation. This fragment from a 16th-century grave-slab was found in the burial-ground of the island's disused chapel in 1880-2. It was moved to the grounds of Kildalton House, Islay, and later transferred to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (now NMS). This fragment is probably the upper part of the rectangular grave-slab. It bears the figure of a priest within a niche and holding a chalice. Above this is the base of what is probably a foliated cross, and it is bordered by a broad inscribed margin. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
