Description Greenock, Great Harbour View looking SE

Date 11/3/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 423097

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The Great Harbour, Greenock, from the Clyde Graving Dock quay The Great Harbour was planned to give Greenock unrivalled port facilities on the Clyde, but business never justified its completion. The extent of the water space in the dock is shown in this view. The ships shown are mainly small naval auxiliary vessels. The Great Harbour was designed by WR Kinipple, engineer to the Greenock Harbour Trust. The success of Queen's Dock, and the later Prince's and King George V docks in Glasgow made it uneconomic to complete this dock. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
