Scope and Content View of Kildalton Chapel, Islay Dating from the late 12th or early 13th century, Kildalton Chapel is one of the best surviving examples of a medieval parish church in Islay. It was apparently in use till the end of the 17th century when services were transferred to Lagavulin. The burial ground surrounding the chapel contains numerous graveslabs, effigies and crosses, mostly from the Iona School of carving. One cross in particular is a particularly fine example of an Early Christian cross, known as the Kildalton Cross. Oblong in plan, the Chapel is built of coursed flattish boulders bonded with smaller stones laid in coarse lime mortar. At the end of the 18th century, it appears that the walls were intact but that the roof had been demolished 'many years ago'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
