Scope and Content Malt loft, Old Malt Barn, Lagavulin Distillery, Islay, Argyll Lagavulin is an example of the type of distillery that gradually developed after early 19th-century changes in the law made commercial distilling easier. A bucket elevator lifts the barley onto a conveyor-belt, or barley band, in the rafters. Malted barley is stored in the loft until it is sent to the mill where the whisky-making process begins. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into malt. This is dried, milled and mixed with hot water to make wort which is fermented with yeast. The resulting wash is distilled to produce whisky which must then be matured in casks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
