Scope and Content View of entrance to the spring Tobar nam Buadh, Gleann Mor, Hirta, St Kilda Gleann Mor is a glen on the north side of Hirta, the main island of the St Kilda chain. A pasture since ancient times, it is scattered with the remains of dwellings said to date from the Iron Age. This is a view of the entrance to Tobar nam Buadh (Well of the Virtues or of the Excellent Qualities). Many people believed that certain wells and springs had special curative properties. This spring was said to help cure deafness and nervous diseases. There was an altar nearby where people would place offerings such as shells, pebbles or nails. It is said that the Reverend Dr John MacDonald's poem 'Apostle of the North', written in the 1820s, was about Tobar nam Buadh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
