Scope and Content Well and cross-slab, Kilmory Oib, Argyll and Bute The Early Christian period began in Argyll with the arrival in the 6th century of Irish missionaries, of whom St Columba was the most famous. This Early Christian cross-slab stands at the west edge of a well. It is incised on the east face with an outline cross with a triangular upper terminal and square-ended side-arms. The well is a rectangular pool lined with drystone masonry. Carved stones found in western Scotland along with place-name elements such as 'Cill' (church or burial-ground) provide the most widespread evidence of Christian activity.
