Scope and Content Cup-and-ring markings at Kilmichael Glassary, Argyll and Bute In the village of Kilmichael Glassary are two groups of cup-and-ring markings, carved into outcrops of rock. It appears that more markings are concealed beneath overlying turf and tree roots. Immediately to the north-west of the carvings in the fenced enclosure lies an extension of the rock sheet. The exposed rock face is decorated with numerous plain cupmarkings and five with single rings. The Kilmartin area has some of the best examples of later Neolithic and Bronze Age rock-art (particularly cup-and-ring marks) in Scotland. Similar rock-art occurs in north-western Spain, Brittany and Ireland. Why people carved them remains unclear. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
