Scope and Content Professional photographs of tourist places, all in Scotland, plus two unusual features: interior of Alloa Parish Church, and collection of cards and letter heads of hotels, c.1900. Black half leather hard cover with dark blue-green cloth textured as imitation leather, the corners and spine with gold lines. Card pages and watered silk end papers have gilt edges; back cover bears the label of Carlisle & Watts, Dressing Case Makers to Her Majesty, 149 Princes Street, Edinburgh (Carlisle & Watts had moved to No 145 by 1903 and were there for 25 years. Contains illustrated letterheads from hotel notepaper for: Caledonian Hotel, Fortwilliam, 28 August 1901, Adam Graham proprietor; Strathpeffer Spa, Dunraven, The Misses Corbett; Station Hotel, Fort William, 28 August 1901, George Sinclair, proprietor; Avenue Hotel, Belfast, 3 July 1901, Hermann Heussler, Managing Director; Kerridge's Hotel, Dunbar, 1888; Wemyss Bay Hydropathic,Skelmorlie, N.B.; Philp's, Dunblane Hydropathic 6 August 1900; Hydropathic Establishment, Kilmalcolm 1899; Station Hotel, Wick (Ardrossan 30 April 1901); Moffat from the SW; Kyles of Bute Hydropathic Establishment, Port Bannatyne, Bute; Falls of Lora Hotel, Connel Ferry Station (5 miles from Oban); West Shandon House, Shandon, N.B. (shows Shandon Hydropathic, Gareloch); Lochiel Arms Hotel, Banavie, N.B. Ticket issued by Giant's Causeway Co., Ltd., "Admission 6d, Giant's Causeway Amphitheatre, Cliff Walk, Shelter and Cloakroom etc. at the Chalet, Refreshments at moderate charges." Also included are JV views of Loch Ness with sailing boat and paddle steamer; Dunbar Old Harbour and a view of Alloa Parish Church, interior 1896. An amateur view entitled "Upper reaches of the Firth of Clyde, mainland, tidal" shows a cottage in process of being roofed and three ladies in a rowing boat. A press cutting has been inserted which reads: "Queen Victoria's visit to Roslin - A correspondent lately asked who was the author of the following lines which refer to the stone carvings in Roslin Chapel:- "There's carving work in rich profusion / Far too numerous to mention; / Leaves and flowers, fruit and ferns / The cypress grove with beauty reigns. / We gaze around with wonder here / Bewildered with the foliage rare / Large oak leaves and trefoil / Curly greens for making kale." we are informed that these lines are from a poem of considerable length written by Ex-Provost Porteous, Oakbrook, Broomieknowe, Lasswade, on the occasion of Queen Victoria's visit to Hawthornden and Roslin, during her stay in Edinburgh in 1847. Ex-Provost Porteous is still alive and writing poetry, 1904."
