Scope and Content Barley boxes, Old Malt Barn, Lagavulin Distillery, Islay, Argyll Lagavulin is an example of the type of distillery that gradually developed after early 19th-century changes in the law made commercial distilling easier. These barley boxes were used to spread wet 'green' malt on the floor of the kiln to dry. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into malt. This is dried, milled and mixed with hot water to make wort which is fermented with yeast. The resulting wash is distilled to produce whisky which must then be matured in casks.
