Scope and Content View of Life Modelling Studio, Glasgow School of Art, No 167 Renfrew Street, Glasgow This view of a sculpture studio in the Glasgow School of Art was photographed in 1910 by Harry Bedford Lemere. It is one of two studios in the basement of the School which has distinctive roof trusses, and is shown here designed for life modelling. The studio, well-lit by natural light from above, also has an electric light system which was a comparatively new technology of the time. The lights run on a series of pulleys, allowing each bulb to be positioned directly above a student's workstation. The architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, paid great attention to architectural detail. Here, the ends of the steel T-beams supporting the roof beams were split and forged into sculptural forms, a task which, it is said, brought the workmen out on strike.
