Scope and Content St Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Falcon Avenue, Morningside, Edinburgh St Peter's Roman Catholic Church, a rather austere building in an Italianate style, was designed by the Edinburgh architect, Sir Robert Lorimer, in 1906. The church was the brainchild of Canon John Gray, who became its first parish priest, 1907-34. The church, with tall arched windows and shallow buttresses, is built of variegated masonry with a copper-covered roof. On the south side, the nave, hall and priest's house form an open entrance court with a tall campanile in the north-east corner. Canon John Gray, writer, poet and former librarian to the Foreign Office, was ordained to the priesthood in 1901. His lifelong friend, Andre Raffalovitch, whom he had met in literary circles in London, financed most of the building of the church. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
