Scope and Content View of the Library Balcony, Glasgow School of Art, No 167 Renfrew Street, Glasgow The library of Glasgow School of Art, one of the finest rooms in Glasgow, was built during the second phase of construction of the School in 1907-9. This dramatic view of the library balcony was taken in 1910 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The library balcony, lit from the left by the long library windows in the School's west façade, has low cupboards (right) with sloping tops on which books can be laid for inspection. The wooden uprights (left) are chamfered at the angles and painted. Chamfering, a rustic technique, was commonly used within the Arts and Crafts movement, and used here to effect by the School's architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. His chamfers are coloured in strict sequence in strong blues, greens, reds and whites. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
