Scope and Content Pre-restoration view of Little Tarrell Castle, near Portmahomack, Highland Little Tarrell Castle was probably built in the late 16th century for the Rosses of Little Tarrell. It served as a store and bothy from in the early 19th century until 1981-4 when it was restored. This shows the castle in 1978 before it was restored. The main entrance is at the top of the overgrown forestair in the angle between the castle's two wings. The gables are crow-stepped. The west gable (left) is pierced by gun-ports.
