Description Foulis Castle. View from North West.

Catalogue Number SC 400281

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of RC 1813

Scope and Content Courtyard steading, Foulis Castle, near Evanton, Highland Foulis Castle, in its present form, was built between 1740 and 1777 by the Munro family who had owned the land since the 13th century. Parts of its masonry contain sections of an earlier tower-house which existed by 1587. Most of the courtyard steading to the rear of the main range probably dates from 1792. However, the square tower at the far end of the west range (left) has a vaulted basement equipped with gun-ports and may have formed part of the 16th-century defences.
