Scope and Content Exterior, Ballone Castle, near Portmahomack, Highland Ballone Castle was built in the mid 16th century as the stronghold of the Dunbars of Easter Tarbat. It was extended in the early 17th century. The round tower (right) and the square tower (left) give the castle a Z-shaped ground- plan typical of its period. The main block's first-floor window lit a hall. The ground floor contained a wine-cellar and kitchen. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
