Scope and Content Newton Hotel, Inverness Road, Nairn, Highland Nairn was founded as a royal burgh in about 1200. By 1800, it was a thriving community with its own fishing town. It developed into a resort after it was connected to the rail network in 1855. The original block (right) of Newton Hotel was built in about 1830, before Nairn's tourist trade expanded. The Scots Baronial north block (left), complete with tower, was built in 1874-7 by Alexander Ross. The original block was remodelled in 1896. Historical styles like Scots Baronial, inspired by pre-18th-century architecture became popular in the 19th century because they reflected national, rather than Classical, architectural traditions.
