Scope and Content Footbridge over River Ness, Church Lane, Inverness, Highland Inverness expanded rapidly in the 19th century following construction of the Caledonian Canal (begun in 1804) and connection to the rail network (1855). Its main industries at that period were ship-building, iron founding and saw-milling. The River Ness footbridge on Church Lane was constructed in 1881, probably by the local Rose Street foundry with C R Manners as the engineer. It is a simple suspension-bridge with wire-rope cables slung between lattice-girder pylons. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
