Scope and Content Cromarty Primary School and Schoolhouse, Braehead, Cromarty, Highland Cromarty was a depopulated and poor burgh until 1772 when George Ross purchased the Cromarty estate and went on to establish a rope-works and a brewery. The town flourished until about 1850 when both enterprises failed. Cromarty Primary School and Schoolhouse were built by Maitland and Sons in 1875-8 in Gothic style. Four years after the school's completion, the burgh was described as having 'an appearance of picturesque decay'. Gothic architecture, the distinctive pointed-arched style of the later Middle Ages, was revived in the late 18th century. It remained popular for public buildings, especially churches, well into the 20th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
