Scope and Content Mercat Cross, High Street, Fortrose, Highland Fortrose began as a settlement belonging to the canons of Fortrose Cathedral. It became a royal burgh in 1590, but in 1691 was said to be still a 'little village'. By the later 19th century, the town was an established holiday resort. This 1961 photograph shows the Mercat Cross in its place on the High Street. The cross probably dates from around the time when Fortrose became a royal burgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
