Scope and Content Exterior, St Duthus Collegiate Church, Castle Brae, Tain, Highland St Duthus Collegiate Church was founded in 1487 by Thomas Hay, Bishop of Ross, after a suggestion by King James III. It served as the parish church until 1814. It was heavily restored in 1859-70 and again in the 1890s. The church is surrounded by a graveyard containing monuments from as early as the 17th century. The roofless building to its right may have been an earlier parish church, built in about 1300. Collegiate churches were served by colleges of priests or canons who prayed for the founder's soul, a form of medieval spritual insurance. By the later Middle Ages, many such churches were endowed in preference to the larger, more impersonal monasteries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
