Scope and Content Aerial view of Wick Harbour, Wick, Highland Wick Harbour's Inner Harbour was constructed by George Burn in 1808, but reconstructed by Thomas Telford in 1824-31. The Outer Harbour was begun in 1862-7 and completed in 1882-7 when piers were also built across the Wick River to create the River Basin. From the air, the piers of the Inner Harbour (right) and Outer Harbour (left) form a 'B'. The triangular River Basin occupies the lower part of the picture. Most of the visible structures are concrete and date from alterations in 1882-7 by James Barron. Wick, a royal burgh since 1589, remained a small town until after 1801 when Thomas Telford planned the harbour and new town on behalf of the British Fisheries Society. By the middle of the 19th century, Wick was Europe's largest herring port. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
