Scope and Content Aerial view of West Wemyss, Fife West Wemyss became a burgh of barony in 1551. Initially its economy was based on salt-making though it had a harbour by 1621. In the 19th century, the town became dominated by the coal industry. This aerial view shows the burgh in 1991. The harbour (top) was built in 1872-3 by J and A Leslie.
