Scope and Content Detail of bootscraper on east side of Reef Mog Close, Newburgh, Fife A settlement was established at Newburgh by 1266, when Alexander III allowed the monks of Lindores Abbey to formally establish their town as a burgh. It became a royal burgh in 1631. By the early 19th century, it was a town of salmon fishers and weavers. Newburgh is a typical Scottish burgh of linear layout, with a long wide High Street, and numerous closes such as this one, stretching out behind the main street façades. The buildings are typical of the 18th-century vernacular architecture of the region. The walls are rubble-built and harled, and the windows are small and set close to the eaves at first-floor level. There are also remnants of smaller details, such as this bootscraper by the doorway of one of the houses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
