Scope and Content View of north end of Reef Mog Close, Newburgh, Fife A settlement was established at Newburgh by 1266, when Alexander III allowed the monks of Lindores Abbey to formally establish their town as a burgh. It became a royal burgh in 1631. By the early 19th century, it was a town of salmon fishers and weavers. Newburgh displays many of the characteristics typical of a Scottish burgh of linear layout. It has a long wide High Street, with numerous closes, such as Reef Mog Close shown here, stretching out behind the main street façades. This view shows features typical of the 18th-century vernacular architecture of the region. The walls are rubble-built and harled; the windows are small and set close to the eaves at first-floor level. The steps on the far wall lead to an entrance door. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
