SC 397221

Description Drawing of Nigg Pictish cross-slab. (Front)

Collection Papers of Ian G Scott, archaeological illustrator, Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 397221

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 41135

Scope and Content Drawing of Nigg cross-slab, Ross and Cromarty This face of the cross-slab, which has been repaired, is decorated with a background of bossed ornament. The six panels are all different. The central panels are covered with mesh-like interlace and surrounded with snakes' bodies. The cross is covered with interlace and key patterns. Above the cross, in a triangular pediment, are the figures of St Paul and St Anthony in the desert with a raven which has a loaf of bread in its beak. The side of the stone (right) is decorated too. Influenced by Northumbrian craftsmen and inspired by manuscripts and metalwork, the Picts carved the most intricate patterns. Interlaces, key-patterns and spiral patterns were similar to those found in The Book of Kells. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
