Scope and Content Detail showing roundel, courtyard front of south range of Falkland Palace, Fife Falkland Palace was remodelled in 1537-41 for King James V (died 1542). The south range dates from his reign, as do the exteriors of the earlier buildings. The east and north ranges were probably both built for King James IV (1488-1513). This stylised roundel - similar to contemporary examples at the English Hampton Court Palace - is part the Renaissance style courtyard front of the south range. In each of his two marriage contracts with French princesses, King James V promised Falkland Palace as the queen's residence should he die first. His remodelling of the palace was probably intended to impress his future wife and her family. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
