Scope and Content Aerial view of a fort on Bell Hill, Scottish Borders The remains of a rectangular fort lie on a small ridge on the east side of Bell Hill, around 910m north-east of Smedheugh steading. The position is a naturally strong one as the ground rises steeply to the south-east and north-west. Only the defences of this fort survive today as cultivation of the interior has destroyed any remains of buildings. Three lines of ramparts with two medial ditches can be seen here. Whilst appearing impressive, many hillforts probably were constructed as displays of prestige and power by tribal leaders, often occupying prominent positions in the landscape.
