Scope and Content Aerial view of Monastery and Abbey, Iona, Argyll and Bute The monastery at Iona founded by Columba in the 6th century became one of the greatest monasteries of the Irish church, controlling daughter houses in Ireland, Argyll (Dál Riata), Pictland, and, for a time in the 7th century, in Northumbria. The vallum, the most visible element of the early monastery, can be seen in the top right of the image. The vallum, the boundary of the monastery, consisted of an inner bank about 1.8m high, a ditch and an outer bank 1.2m high. The enclosure around the monastery was a rectangular area with an annex at the south end and covered approimately 8 hectares. In Ireland most monastic enclosures were round or oval but a few were rectangular, like Iona. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
