Scope and Content Drawings of cross-slab, Kilmory Oib, Argyll and Bute The Early Christian period began in Argyll with the arrival in the 6th century of Irish missionaries, including St Columba. Carved stones and the word 'cill' (church or burial-ground) in place names provide widespread evidence of Christian activity. This Early Christian cross-slab stands at the west edge of a well. The west face of the stone, carved in low relief, is decorated with two opposed animals, possibly horses. Below is a cross with a double transom, and two pairs of birds. Pairs of birds are often associated with the cross in French and Mediterranean sculpture and metalwork, but the motif is rare in Britain. Birds are found in the Book of Kells. The cross with the double transom is also rare and is of Byzantine origin. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
