Scope and Content Steeple of Parish Church and Anstruther Wester Town Hall, Anstruther Wester, Fife The steeple was constructed in the 16th century as part of the Parish Church. From early on it was also used for burgh purposes, especially as a prison. In the late 18th century, a new Town Hall was built next door to share the steeple with the church. The steeple, seen here above the surrounding buildings, was the natural place for the burgh council to install the burgh clock and bell. Unfortunately, in 1827, this led to a legal dispute with the Kirk Session over ownership of the fittings. Anstruther Wester began as part of a fishing town, becoming a Burgh of Barony in 1541, and a Royal Burgh in the 1580s. A 'mean town' in 1616, it suffered economic damage from the Act of Union in 1707 but recovered in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
