Scope and Content View from south-east showing protected mural over fireplace in a room in Abbot's House, 21 Maygate, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. There were a number of other buildings associated with the abbey including the frater hall, gatehouse, royal guest house or palace and the abbot's house. Built c.1450 as a residence for Abbot Richard de Bothwell this house was reconstructed in the 16th century as the home of Robert Pitcairn, the abbey's commendator (a non-monastic royal appointee granted a religious house for services to the Crown). In 1992-5 the building was restored as a heritage centre, café and shop. During restoration, many original features were uncovered, such as the former doorway (right), and, behind the screen, there is painted mural decoration above a fireplace.
