Scope and Content View of Frater Hall (Refectory) and latrine, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. There were a number of other buildings associated with the abbey church, including the frater hall, gatehouse and royal guest house or palace. This photograph shows part of the frater hall (left) and the latrine to the monks' dormitory (right). The dormitory formed the eastern side of the cloister which lay to the south of the abbey church. It also contained a 'warming room' where the monks could warm themselves in colder weather. The frater hall contained the monks' refectory or dining hall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
