Scope and Content View of the Gatehouse and Frater Hall (Refectory), Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. There were a number of other buildings associated with the abbey church, including the frater hall, gatehouse and royal guest house or palace. This photograph shows the west end of the frater hall (left) and the gatehouse (right). The frater hall contained the monks' refectory in the upper storey, lit by this 15th-century seven-light window with elaborate tracery. The tower on the left contained a staircase leading to all storeys. All visitors passed through the gatehouse. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
