Scope and Content View of wall of the Palace, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. There were a number of other buildings associated with the abbey church, including the frater hall, gatehouse and royal guest house or palace. This photograph shows one wall of the palace with a number of large buttresses and a bay window above. The guest house was available for important visitors to the abbey to stay in. Many visitors to the abbey were monarchs, including James VI's queen, Anne of Denmark, who came to Dunfermline in 1589. The future Charles I was born here in 1600.
