Scope and Content Burnhead, limeworks, Dumfries and Galloway Lime-kilns were usually built of stone and were often positioned against a natural bank. At Burnhead, the limeworks were in operation in the mid-19th century. Today, the kiln-bank survives and two brick-lined bowls and draw-arches can still be seen. Limestone was fired in kilns, like this example, and the resulting lime was spread on fields to improve the fertility of the agricultural ground. It was also used for building and industrial purposes. Evidence from old maps would suggest that extraction of limestone from quarries in south-west Scotland has taken place since at least the 17th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
