Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Andrew Jardine and Jean Aitchison, Applegarth churchyard, Dumfries and Galloway This gravestone commemorates Andrew Jardine, who died in 1777 aged 83 years. Also interred here is his wife, Jean Aitchison, who died in 1736 aged 36 years. Carved in relief, this portrait depicts Jean who holds an open Bible in her hand, to signify her faith in the word of God. An hourglass symbolises human mortality, whilst the skull and crossbones are obvious tokens of death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
